A safe harbour for weary wayfarers

Aesop Lumine Yokohama takes its inspiration from the nearby port around which the city first flourished. The space evokes a dockyard at dawn, where industrial materials are awash with marine hues and translucent surfaces reflect the surrounding waters of Tokyo Bay.

An angled entranceway leads into an open space with a concrete-effect floor where visitors can navigate the amber bottles and jars lining the sea-green walls. Semi-polished resin shelves float in a regimented formation between vertical pipes, and in the storage beneath the stainless steel basins. The repetition of this element—translucent as the froth of a ship’s wake—lends a sense of buoyancy.

A vintage Herman Miller tandem bench provides a moment of rest and reflection for weary customers, in a form that alludes to the moulded plastic seats on ferries from which passengers watch the world go by. Directly opposite, a slim corridor leads to the back of house, narrow as a gangway, with a luminous frosted glass panel at the end of it that hints at an intriguing beyond.
